Wednesday’s scores: http://soccernet-akamai.espn.go.com/s…Latest standings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euro_200…Your World Times:Euro 2008 football action was in full swing again on Wednesday as the picture of which 14 teams will join hosts Austria and Switzerland in the tournament finals is becoming more clear. The Czech Republic trounced the Germans - who had already locked up their spot in the finals over the weekend - 3-0 in Munich to secure the second berth from Group D. Thanks to a late goal, defending Euro 2004 Champions Greece will be playing in the finals as they beat third-place Turkey 1-0. Romania’s 2-0 win over lowly Luxembourg sent them through to the finals from Group G. The second place Dutchmen beat Slovenia 2-0 to send their lead over third-place Bulgaria to 4 points, but the win came with a heavy cost as they lost Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart to injuries. Cristiano Ronaldo scored what proved to be the deciding goal in the 90th minute of Portugal’s 2-1 win over Kazakhstan as the race for the two spots from Group A remains tight between group leaders Poland, the second place Portuguese and Serbia and Finland who are currently tied for third with 20 points apiece. France got a huge win thanks to two late goals by Thierry Henry who broke Michel Platini’s French scoring record. Henry’s 42nd and 43rd career goals sent Les Bleus to the top of the Group B table. Scotland, who entered the day as the Group B leaders, fell in a shutout to Georgia 2-0. The match may be the deciding blow to the Scottish hopes of reaching the finals as Italy trails them by only one point, but has two more matches to play compared to Scotland’s one. Northern Ireland surprised Group F leaders Sweden with a 1-1 draw that prevented them from sealing their trip to the finals. Northern Ireland’s Kyle Lafferty scored a fantastic equalizer in the 72nd minute to keep their dim finals hopes alive. One team whose finals hopes were severely dampened is England who lost 2-1 to Russia on two goals by Pavluchenko. The loss drops England’s lead for the final qualifying spot in Group E to two points over Russia who holds an advantage over England as the Russians have two games to play, compared to England’s one. Euro 2008 qualifying will wrap up in November with the last two match days coming on the 17th and 21st of the month.
